I live in an apartment in Washington DC and my stove caught fire. Am I responsible for damages?

The apartments recently were renovated & the stoves that were installed have knobs that do not stop at all, including on off, they just go around and around, no clicks or anything. The stove was turned off. There was a container with grease close to the store. There was more water damage than from the fire. The rental office was contacted, but didn't seem like they were going to do anything, we went in and cleaned up the apartment, removing damaged clothing and other possessions and drying everything that seemed salvageable . Then within 1-2 days, maintenance went into my apt (w/o any notification) to test sprinklers and caused even more water damage including leaving standing water which has caused damage to the floors, furniture and appliances and now they refuse to do anything about it. I went to them to ask what is going to be done in order for me to move back and this is when they informed me that I caused the fire and that I'm responsible for all damages. Am I?
